This Variscite came out around 1980's. This one is a solid piece of rich all shades of green. I polished both sides on this one, solid Variscite . Barely any matrix on this specimen. 4 inch by 2 inch by 3/8 inch thick. Weight 2.6 oz. Mined long ago from Clay Canyon, Fairfield, Utah USA. Love these high quality Variscites. The green color results from the presence of small amounts of Chromium. Variscite is a secondary mineral formed by direct deposition from phosphate-bearing water that has reacted with aluminium-rich rocks in a near-surface environment. It occurs as fine-grained masses in nodules, cavity fillings, and crusts. Variscite often contains white veins of the calcium aluminium phosphate mineral crandallite. Be sure to zoom the photos.
