A very old Antique 1820 English Medical Surgeon’s Knife by WEISS AND SON 62 STRAND. Tortoise Handles
This fine antique medical surgeon’s knife was manufactured around 1820 by the famed company of John Weiss and Son. The London-based surgical instrument company was founded in 1787 by John Weiss, an Austrian, whose skill as master cutler and instrument maker were soon widely acknowledged. He received much recognition, including a Royal Warrant for his inventiveness and craftsmanship. The blades are both marked “WEISS AND SON 62 STRAND”. The handles are make of natural material and are crack free and in remarkable condition. The two blades are in original condition, with most of the original mirror-finish remaining they show a few speckles of pepper spots from age. The blades sit rock-solid when open, and are held firmly by spring catches. This antique surgeon’s knife measures 3.75 inches (9.5cm) in length; the blades are 2.75 inches (7cm).
